God Is In The Quiet - Prose

God is in the quiet-
In the still, small breath
                Of a mouse;
In the circular orbit
                Of an atom;
In the vast silence
                Of space;
And there is no space
                That is not God.

Fall - Prose

Fall

white light bends from an azure sky
filtering milkily
through leaves on towering trees
tinting greens then yellows then reds and browns
who hang precariously, timidly
a deep last breath
sweetly releasing
floating, falling
finally satisfied
returned to the
hungry soil

Facade - Prose

Facade

Like the pretty woman
Who avoided my glance
And shifted hers
To the boys at her feet

And spoke to them
To make me see
That she belongs to them
And not to me

What makes her strain in the daytime
What men has she had to beat
That she now vomits away
When I look toward her taken eyes?

All I wanted was some hope-
Men need that-
Need to be able to look
Into the sunshine of the feminine
They do it instinctively
They do it greedily sometimes
And frantically
Not for sex or some third tier need
But simply for nurturing – to remember
That there is something soft and forgiving
In this hard world of angles

So now I ask
As one turned away at the inn
When will she heal
When will she walk unencumbered
(As I am also a victim of the Mankind
That unkindly made her Its object)

When will I be allowed to gaze
Past this worthy façade
To the Face I would see beneath
Her lighted eyes

Not to persuade her to a dark corner
Away from her children
But to simply see in her
The light that is there
The light that was there
That should be allowed to shine
And would
Were it not for that time
Long ago…

Erica's Winter (for Ekka) - Prose 2006

Erica’s Winter

With eyebrows hinged in the middle
And weighted towards the outer edge
A worry-worn expression
On your porcelain visage

What murders come to you at night?
What fiendish beasts come up behind?
What demons, indeed what treasons
Make beauty like yours halt and cry?

Deep currents run ‘neath icy caps
As leafless trees watch closely by
The shrill wind blows and weak limbs snap
But - winter’s death itself soon dies

And furthermore look towards the sky
That greatest light which shines afar
Melts away the hoary frost,
Illumes the moon that dims the stars

So un-weight those outer edges
And with faith grab whatever ring
For under orangey skies you’ll see
You will achieve your fondest dreams

Drivers' Ed - Prose

Drivers Ed

We drive around in these containers
Of snot, blood, and urine
Held up by an internal structure
Similar in most of us
With specialized components within our skin
To make all the rest of it work

At first we mobilize
Go where We direct our brain to take us;
Early on that’s how it is,
Until our Brain begins to believe
That it knows how to drive
And then it jerks away the wheel and says
I remember how THAT feels
I bet she’s going to do THIS
I know what to do NEXT

Until one day
After the millionth wreck
And the original Us
Is finally able to
Stop the panting
Maybe sobbing
Brain
And direct its attention
Past the rear window
To the wreckage caused,
Not by others
As the Brain would usually suggest
But instead by the brain “knowing” things

In that moment of
Rare
Stillness
When the Brain pulls over, panting
Maybe sobbing
And sees for the First Time
That it knows Nothing
That it is just a part of the vehicle
Not the skilled driver
That it thought it was-
That’s when the original Us
Can gently suggest
That it instruct
The brain about driving
As was Originally Intended

For the safety of vehicle
And the other drivers on the road.

The steering wheel on my car
Is lined with calf leather and is
Stitched expertly.
It is beautiful to look at.
It has all the makings of comfort.
It is fine to the touch.
But…
It has indents from my fingers in its soft leather-
Indents that stay when my hands are not there.

And it has salt stains from my tears…
